The above inscription reads: "Dedicated to PVT Francis X. McGraw, Company H, 26th Infantry, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for extraordinary gallantry in opposing an enemy assault against his position on 19th November 1944. Although he was heavily engaged by enemy machinegun and rocket fire, PVT McGraw continued to fight until mortally wounded, thus inspiring his comrades to repulse the attack. Given in his memory by the officers and men of the 1st Battallion, 20th Infantry, now serving in the Federal Republic of Germany. January 1981."
